2019 Conference Call for Papers and Design Submission

Conference Title: Access and Inclusion in Oral History

Conference Dates: Thursday, April 18 – Friday, April 19

Location: Monmouth University, West Long Branch, NJ

Deadline for Submissions: January 15

Oral History in the Mid-Atlantic Region (OHMAR) invites paper and panel proposals for its 2019 Annual Meeting, “Access and Inclusion in Oral History.†The conference will be held at Monmouth University from Thursday, April 18 – Friday, April 19.

How can the oral history community ensure that individuals with unique needs, including but not limited to visual, hearing, mobility, or cognitive challenges, are able to participate in oral history as both interviewers and narrators? How do we share oral histories, both in brick and mortar archives and on the web, in broadly accessible formats? In what ways is the oral history community documenting the disability rights movement? The experience of those with special needs? Narrators and researchers who prefer to “speak in the language of their heart?†Who is the audience for such interviews and how do we prioritize levels of accessibility when resources to do so are limited?

OHMAR encourages presenters to interpret the conference theme creatively in the context of their own work and community projects.

Possible topics may include:

  • How to conduct an oral history when the narrator has unique hearing, visual, mobility, emotional, etc, challenges
  • How to conduct an oral history when the interviewer has unique hearing, visual, mobility, emotional, etc, challenges
  • Oral history and sign language
  • Transcripts and the visually impaired
  • The legal and ethical obligations of oral historians to ensure everyone’s access to their collections, both in-person and on the web
  • Ideas for providing everyone access to oral history collections, both in-person and on the web
  • Oral history and the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Oral history and disability studies
  • Oral history and the Disability Rights Movement
  • Narrators in Crisis

Application Guidelines:

The program committee invites proposals for panels or roundtables, as well as for individual papers. We encourage proposals from students and early career oral historians, and we welcome presentations that feature audio-visual components. We also welcome proposals for alternative session types, including experiential modules, “point-counterpoint†debates, and community viewpoints comprising the narrators and interviewers of an oral history project.

Individual paper/presentation proposals should include a brief abstract of 250-500 words, a biographical summary about the author, and contact information. Roundtable proposals should include a 250-500 word abstract of the roundtable topic, a brief biographical summary for each invited participant, and contact information. Panel proposals should include a broad description of the panel theme and brief abstracts of 150-200 words for each paper.

OHMAR also encourages poster submissions, comprising a 200-300 word abstract, a brief biographical summary of the creator, and the creator’s contact information. Posters can be no larger than 36†x 48†and presenters may also use multimedia options (e.g., oral history recordings or GIS “Story Mapsâ€) as a complement (presenters must bring their own technology).

The deadline for all submissions is January 15. All submissions should be emailed with attachments to ohmar.conference@gmail.com. Please feel free to contact us at that email address at any time with questions.
